Report: ‘China is everywhere’ in Africa’s technology market

Chinese tech companies has recently dived into Africa’s markets. About half of the Chinese companies in Africa have introduced a new product or service.

The Middle Kingdom’s expansion into Africa has been particularly pronounced over the past few years. China is everywhere and the country’s presence was stronger in certain markets.

It is the only player in Ethiopia, with Chinese investment in the country’s tech industry totaling $3 billion (2012).

But, China is making its presence felt not just in East Africa, but in far north as well as far south as well.

Success in Africa come down to cost, with Chinese firms offering affordable alternatives compared to their U.S. and European competitors. African companies welcome the Chinese companies as well.

The China-Africa tech story began about 2 decades back with the expansion of ZTA , the Chinese telecommunications giant followed by Huawei.

According to a report,

“Nearly half of Chinese firms in Africa have introduced a new product or service to the local market, and more than one-third have introduced a new technology.”
