Professor Shahida Hasnain has made Pakistan proud with her extraordinary achievement in the field of microbiology. She has been named for the prestigious UNESCO prize for microbiology and will be presented with the Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize during the 39th session of the General Conference of UNESCO on 6 November.
Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize award basically aims to reward extraordinary advances made in the field of microbiology through technology and research.
UNESCO recognized Professor Hasnain’s work, praising her for the a number of contributions in the field of agriculture environment, and medical microbiology.
“She has notably worked on the heavy metal detoxification mechanisms, salt stress tolerance mechanisms, and bacterial Morphogenesis.”
Professor Shahida Hasnain is the Founder and chairperson of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Punjab in Lahore.
She holds a number of distinctions for different projects including:
- UNESCO/ROSTSCA Award for Young Scientist (from Central and South Asian region) in 1988,
- Fatima Jinnah Gold Medal in 2006 by Government of Punjab
- Pakistan and Star Laureate 2007 in Science and Technology by South Asia Publications 2008.
