Pakistan and China just inaugurated an optic fibre cable as part of the mega CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor). This project will connect China to Pakistan and to Central Asian regions at a later point in time.
The optic cable was inaugurated by General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the Army Chief, H.E. Mr Yao Jing, the Chinese Ambassador, as well as Mr Charles Yang, Director General of the Special Communications Organization (SCO).
It is the first project under the early harvest programme of the CPEC. It is also the only information and communication technology (ICT) project under China Pakistan Economic Corridor.
This project serves as a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s telecommunication industry. It will give the needed infrastructure for high speed internet services in the region (Gilgit-Baltistan). It is owned by SCO and its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor was Huawei.
It will serve to improve Pakistan’s telecom and ICT industry as well as tourism.
